Jones started his career successfully with 18 consecutive wins, but most of his opponents were not highly regarded. His most famous match-up was against Cassius Clay in which he lost a close ten-round decision in front of a sold-out Garden, the first time the Garden had sold out since Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano fought there in 1951. Many observers felt that Jones should have won the decision, and the huge Garden crowd loudly booed the announcement of Clay's victory. In fact, many spectators threw beer, peanuts, ticket stubs and even bottles into the ring. After losing to Clay, Jones continued to box professionally until 1967, but his success was limited.
