Lewis won 14 consecutive victories after turning pro in 1966, but was finally stopped by Bob Stallings in 1967. Lewis emerged once again a winner and serious contender in 1968. He beat Stallings twice in rematches, and well respected Eduardo Corletti in just two rounds. By the end of 1968, his career took a dive when he lost to Leotis Marin twice. He started winning again in 1969, and performed so well against Oscar Bonavena that he was given a shot at Muhammad Ali in 1972. Ali struggled in the match, but went on to win by TKO in the 11th round. Although he scored three consecutive knockout victories in 1973, they were against mediocre opponents, and Lewis decided his days as a pro boxer were done. Today, he is a well-respected trainer in Detroit, Michigan.
