Siler began boxing professionally in 1960, and his match-up with Clay was the third of his relatively short career, which ended in 1967. Just five years after he retired from boxing, Siler was charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a friend and was found guilty. After serving a 7-year sentence at the Belle Glades Correctional Institute, Siler claimed to be a new man who had beaten his addiction to alcohol. Now a devout Christian, he started his own construction company, which was quite successful in the late 1980s. His grandson is NFL linebacker Brandon Siler.
