$7,500.00 |
Photographer Neil Liefer captured an aerial view of Muhammad Ali's second title bout between Ali and Sonny Liston on May 25,1965 in Lewiston, Maine. It was Ali's first title defense after taking the heavyweight crown from Liston just a little more than a year earlier. Much controversy surrounded the outcome, as observers watched Ali land a "Phantom Punch" that many believe never connected. To add to the controversy, referee Jersey Joe Walcott lost track of the count! Many believed the fight was thrown by Liston because of his well-known mob ties, though Ali insisted that the punch really landed. Film footage of the fight showing the right hand landing with a rippling effect in Liston's back muscles helped to support Ali's position. However, the controversy continues 'til this day. Original, limited edition 20" x 24" photo, # 74/350, signed on the border by Neil Liefer and Muhammad Ali. Authenticated by Steve Jackson Authentications, Online Authentics and Ali biographer Thomas Hauser (authenticating Ali's autograph). Also includes a Letter of Authenticity from Neil Liefer, authenticating the photo.
